Okay, so I don't miss a chance to talk about Paint Shop Pro. When you need a great program to design and/or manipulate graphics for print or for web page authoring, this is it! Of course, there's a few programs geared towards professionals that may be better but none that I know that sell under $100. If you have an older version of Paint Shop Pro, you MUST get v5.0. The program itself offers a spectacular array of options now and features that will either make your designing simpler or give you a greater ability to be more creative. I'm not an artist myself but have enjoyed making the graphics scattered throughout my V.E.. Further, there's ZILLIONS of PSP sites popping up around the net that offer free plugin brushes, tubes and filters for you to add onto the program. If you've thought of getting Paint Shop Pro before and were undecided, Beyond.com even sells it LOTS cheaper than the manufacturer. I can't tell you exactly how much less but *whispering* it's more than $25 off.
One of the biggest worries of any computer owner is data protection. If you don't have it already, Norton's Utilities can help save you some headaches. It just takes minutes to install and is fairly simple to follow, especially for non-technical, do-it-yourselfers like me. *giggle* Key features include Registry tools editor and advisor (I haven't used it but, since Brother Jake is still around the net, I'd say it works *lol*...sorry, Jake, but I figured YOU're glad you have it. *LOL*); a System Genie to help you customize Win95; Live Update that lets you know when there's an update available and allows you to download it; a Space Wizard for freeing up disk space (if you're a pack rat like me, you can use this one); UnErase that helps you get back those you *oops* accidentally deleted *lol* (okay, I've done that), and a host of other features.
If you love downloading from the net or sharing files with your friends, Norton AntiVirus is a must. Just an aside to my hacker friends who like to "fool" downloadable shareware without paying for it, don't mess with Symantec *lol*. The provider of Norton's software is leading the war against software piracy and aggressively made sure that folks who try to crack their software know that they are. *hehe* Beyond that, I'm not saying a word more. Anyway, it's too good a product not to pay for it's affordable price.
Another personal favorite program of mine is Comptons Interactive Cookbook. Why do I like this program and why in the world would I buy a cookbook when I have shelves of them already? For one thing, it's a multimedia cookbook with 2,500+ recipes, lots of pictures and even videos for some. But I like it especially for its menu planner and shopping list. One cool feature that I also enjoy is the capability of searching through the recipes by name, ingredient, preparation time and other combinations.
One of the reasons I made my great leap into the information age and bought a computer 3 years ago was to encourage my children to be computer literate. All three, ages 15, 12 and 7, are comfortable using the computer for various reasons and it's been a great incentive for them to do their chores *grin*. I pay my kids in cash allowances and computer tokens, which are traded for time on the computer. Naomi, my 12yrold, has taught herself to type and does a decent job at chatting (when I let her). Tommy, my 15yrold, types quickly with 2 fingers but normally spends his time using Paint Shop Pro. My youngest, Jennifer, has begun to find her way around the basic keyboard but still uses a mouse quite well. Needless to say, edutainment software has helped to get Jennifer feeling comfortable at the keyboard. Her current favorite is Jumpstart Second Grade and she hardly realizes she's learning as she plays along with the characters. To browse through Jumpstarts products, click here. Beyond.com has full list of them. Of course, the newest title that kids Jennifer's age want is Mulan Animated Storybook and I'll probably be getting it for Jen in time for Christmas. You gotta love the sneaky way the information age has made learning so enjoyable for our young ones! *grin*
As Beyond.com adds more of our favorites to their inventory, I'll be sure to highlight them here. Don't be shy to "just browse" their site yourself. Another fun reason for shopping on the Internet is that you don't have a salesperson peeking over your shoulder. Just like with any other company, be sure to read over their policies. Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) for visiting this part of my site and letting me wala'au ka waha (speak too much *giggle*). I did promise a different type of shopping experience from what you're used to. A hui ho! (see you later)
