ALL of these ideas are less expensive and more fun to create than purchasing the items outright. You have the satisfaction of knowing YOU made it and saved money doing so. And many can be created very last minute. For some you need to plan ahead a little. Most of the accessories involved can be found at your local thrift shops, garage sales or even in your own home!

EDIBLES

Homemade Applesauce
It's easy with a few apples, to brew up a quick pan of applesauce and can it in decorative jars!

Pear Butter
Use a can of pears and follow the directions on your recipe for fresh fruit butter. Who said that they had to be in season pears anyway?? *grin*

Peach Jam
Likewise with any kind of jams, use canned fruits and make the jam on the spot, again, can in decorative jars. ( Which, of course, you saved all year long, didn't you?)

Coffee Break
A cup (which you purchase at the thrift store) with a small sampling of international coffee, tea, cocoa-depending upon who you wish to give it to. Include individual cream, sugar, and a cinnamon stick. Include a book and you have a great gift!

Soup Mix
Chop up and dehydrate carrots, celery, potatoes (anything else you'd like in your soup). Now you can either make a powdered base for the soup, or simply include several bouillon cubes. Include a package of fancy crackers for the perfect touch.

Recipe Cards
Make up a batch of recipe cards from decorated index cards. Make half of them your own recipes (using drawings on the cards to personalize, e.g. for soup, a steaming pan of soup, or for jam, draw a picture of peaches. etc). Cleverly decorated these can be a precious gift!

Your Thoughts Wanted
You can help by clicking here and sending email with your own ideas. Beyond gift giving and decorating ideas, I would like to add pages on Traditions and Holiday Coping. Send me a paragraph or two on your family's holiday traditions. Unfortunately, this time of year is not always a joyful one for everyone. Loneliness and grieving can be worst at this time of year. If you know what I mean, send me your thoughts in email.

The Holiday Season should be one of joy but isn't always. We hope that these pages help to lessen the stress in your home and extend the joy of giving that makes this a special time of year. Of course, the most precious gift that we can give this season is ourselves and our time. Sit down with a cup of cocoa, or coffee, or tea and explore a bit of holiday cheer!
