CRAFTS
Scented Fire Starter
Collect some candles that have almost been used up (or get new ones cheaply at garage sales). Any color will work. Scented is best, but you can easily add a drop or two of scented oil if you can't find scented ones.
Melt the candles in an old pan. When it reaches it's complete melt point stir in saw dust, or wood shavings and completely coat them.
Quickly scoop out mixture and put in cupcake trays with paper liners. Or pour into a long narrow pan and let harden, then cut in 1" strips and tie with ribbon.
Candles
Melt paraffin in an old pan (you could do this one before the fire starters *g*) and add scented oil. When it reaches it's melting point, carefully pour into the glass containers you've collected. Now add a wick by tying it to a popsicle stick laid over the surface of your container. Let dry.
Canned Candles
A variation on the candle theme is to use a clean and safe can (any size) or jar with an interesting label. Old cans are particularly popular. A candle in a Clabber Girl can is a keepsake!
Treasure Chests
You can make these out of almost any kind of containers. from a shoe box to a oatmeal cylinder! Simply covers with the gummed Contac paper, individualizing it for each child. You can add a few "treasures" if you wish, like marbles, polished stones, tiny toys, shells, anything else you know the child adores.
Keep Sake Cans
Another variation would be to use the can and supply it with paintbrushes for the artist, pencils/pens/markers for the home office, or even a small plant with it's own drip pan inside, for the plant enthusiast.
Paint the bottom of the can with clear nail polish so it won't leave a mark on surfaces.
Bottled Treasures
Use an old (or new) decorative bottle and fill with one of the following: Vinegar, bath oil, bath beads, dried flowers, lace and or ribbons or potpourri.
You can seal your bottle by adding a cork and dipping the whole thing in melted paraffin a few times. Now add a pretty ribbon or silk flower and you have a beautiful gift.
Fabric Picture Frames
Use cardboard as you pattern and cut out fabric to cover the pattern, plus extra for the stuffing. Using your glue gun, glue the fabric to the top piece of cardboard, around where the picture will be. Now stuff to make a puffy frame. Now glue the outside edge and then dab glue your picture on it (Or make a slot with another piece of cardboard on the back, to slip a picture in and out). Finally, hot glue a hanger on the back and trim the front with ribbon, silk flowers or beads.
A Picture of Me
A great gift kids can make is a juice can lid picture frame! It's really simple to cut and glue a school picture of themselves to the inside of a juice can lid. Then they can decorate the edge with ribbon, lace, leather, beads, whatever strikes their fancy!
