ALL of these ideas are less expensive and more fun to create than purchasing the items outright. You have the satisfaction of knowing YOU made it and saved money doing so. And many can be created very last minute. For some you need to plan ahead a little. Most of the accessories involved can be found at your local thrift shops, garage sales or even in your own home!

FLORAL/GARDEN

Potpourri
Make you own, by hanging almost any kind of flowers, blossoms, leaves, upside down to dry. Now break them up into smaller pieces and put in a glass container from the Thrift Store and tie a red satin ribbon around it.

Handmade Dried Floral Arrangements
Ditto the upside down drying idea, just don't break them up. They are more muted than fresh flowers, but they last a very long time. Display in baskets, decorative coffee mugs or glass containers.

Plants
Take old clay pots and revive them by painting them with acrylic paint (or let your kids paint em) and put tiny rock on the bottom for aeration, then plant dirt. Add to that some cuttings from your own houseplants &(or you can start these yourself in water and then plant them) instead of tossing the pruned parts, start new plants!

Seed Packets
Gather seed from your own garden. Keep in dark and dry place and keep well separated from each other. You can use either flowers or vegetables. Now, you can fold up paper of almost any kind to create you seed packets. Then decorate with drawings of the plants from which the seeds came. Label accordingly.

Another Seed Idea
You can collect seed packets (or make them, but perhaps not so decoratively) and create a garden kit for your favorite garden enthusiast! Include many kinds of seeds and keep them stored in a dark container, in a dark and cool area before giving away. A sealed Tupperware/Rubbermaid container works great (you don't have to give the container, but could if you wished, or transfer to a decorated shoe box). Maybe toss in a garden trowel, gloves, bandanna, slug bait, or fertilizer!
