Working on this page brought back memories of childhood days camping at the beach and us teenagers telling ghost stories (geesh...i was my son's age then *lol...muttering*). Whether around a campfire or under a darkened Hawaiian sky with the storyteller holding a solitary flashlight under chin while weaving the tale out loud, we always ended the night with chicken skin (goosebumps) and shivering in our sleeping bags. The mythology of Hawaii nei is so indelibly interwoven into our own island spirituality that the borders between fact and fiction are faded. Thus, I have highlighted the following in its own section.

Legend and myth titles available at Amazon.com by Mary Kawena Pukui, renown author, scholar and writer. See the Hawaii References page for more titles offered by Mary Pukui.
Hawaii Island Legends : Pikoi, Pele and Others Mary Kawena Pukui (Editor), Don Robinson (Illustrator), Tales of the Menehune Mary K. Pukui, and The Water of Kane : And Other Legends of the Hawaiian Islands Mary K. Pukui.

The Burning Island : A Journey Through Myth and History in Volcano Country, Hawaii (Sierra Club Nature and Natural Philosophy Library) Pamela Frierson

Hawaiian Myths of Earth, Sea, and Sky Vivian Laubach Thompson

hawaiian religion and magicHawaiian Religion and Magic Scott Cunningham

The Legends and Myths of Hawaii : The Fables and Folk-Lore of a Strange People David Kalakaua, R. M. Daggett (Editor)

Maui : The Mischief Maker Dietrich Varez (Illustrator), Lilikala Kame'Eleihiwa (Editor)

Na Mo'Olelo Hawai'Io Ka Wa Kahiko : Stories of Old Hawaii Roy Kakula Alameida

Obake Files: Ghostly Encounters in Supernatural Hawaii (Chicken Skin Series)" Glen Grant
Obake: Ghost Stories in Hawaii Glen Grant
One Reader's Review: Great Rendition of Unique Ghost Stories. As the author indicates in his book, the ghost stories of the Hawaiian Islands are very unique, being a mixture of folklore and superstitions from Asia, America, the rest of Oceania, and of course those of the indigenous Hawaiians. There are two types of stories contained in the book, those that are supposedly true, and those involving Hawaiian supernatural beings, but are basically works of fiction. I found the former type of story, masterfully retold by Mr. Grant, to be the most interesting, as I think we are all more scared by hearing of supernatural occurrences that have an air of credibility to them. More reviews at Amazon.
Glen Grant is a master storyteller in the islands, particularly noted for his ability to capture your emotions especially wiht his ghost stories. I've included more of his titles in our Hawaii Fiction and Non Fiction sections. Also read, his Amazon interview.

Pele : Goddess of Hawaii's Volcanoes Herb Kawainui Kane, noted Hawaiian artist.

Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii : A Call to the Soul : Planetary Crossroads and the Key to Our Future Pila of Hawaii, et al Pila of Hawaii will take you on a journey through time and captivate your soul with the life-transforming power that the islands' sacred sites, folklore and myths bring to those who are willing to seek it. Read an interview of Pila Chiles.

The Water of Life : A Jungian Journey Through Hawaiian Myth Rita Knipe
