Web authoring is becoming less of a mystery everyday, adding more webpages and websites to be seen by netsurfers. The amount of ways that a surfer finds your site is increasing and changing as well. Basically, the categories of places where you can advertise are:
SEARCH ENGINES
Still the first resort for the majority of net surfers. Search engines use bots to index a site. Most will simply ask you for the url of your first page and email address. This is still the first place that net surfers go to look for links to what they are trying to find.
Alta Vista, Lycos, Infoseek, Excite, Webcrawler, and Northern Lights are the major search engines.
DIRECTORIES
These categorize webpages for their visitors. If your pages are located at a free webhost site (ie, www.tripod.com), chances are that they include a Directory of their community of webpages according to category. Start there to submit your site. Directories will more than likely ask you for your site's url, contact's email address, keywords that describe your site and a short description of your site. Be sure to read the rules of submission at each since many offer you an opportunity to list your website in more than one category, giving your site more exposure. HotBot, Starting Point,
Yahoo, LookSmart and Northern Lights are a few.
NEWS GROUPS
including Discussion Groups
Share about your site with the folks of news and discussion groups you're involved with. Be sure that your site's content match these groups and do not spam other users.
BANNER EXCHANGES
These require a banner advertising your site. As the category suggests, the program will post members' banners at other sites at a specific exchange rate. For instance, Smart Clicks will post members' banners once on another members' site per clickthru. Everytime a visitor clicks on a Smart Click banner at your site, they will show your banner once at another site. Click on the bottom right-hand corners of the banners on the Labyrinth's front page to read more about Link Exchange's and/or Smart Click's program.
WEB RINGS
The worldwide web is growing and folks are scrambling to find wht they want quicker. Others are scrambling to help net surfers find their way through the maze of websites available with more ease. Web Rings connect websites that deal with other websites that have similiar content. Visit WebRing to join or register a WebRing.
FREE FOR ALL (FFA) Sites
These sites are growing in number. Mainly, because the company who came up with the idea, Linkomatic , offers the program for free. Any visitor who visits a FFA webpage is able to add their url to the webpage's Links page. Add your own link there by supplying your url name, email address, site title and category. Added links become active immediately, normally placed at the top of the category you had signed up for. (tsk! tsk! to those webmasters who add their own links to the top of their FFA pages..turning it into a double promotions for their own site.) As others register their own sites with the webpage, yours descends down one on the list. The number of links listed under each ctegory is limited to a specific number. All of the FFA sites that I have seen thus far have only included links to business opportunity sites or Freebies sites. If you happen onto one, you might as well sign your site up though I haven't seen a great surge in traffic from them. Visit Linkomatic - Maker of FreeForAll Software to see how the program works.
Hint: Make your site title descriptive because this is what visitors see when they first access the webpage.
RECIPROCAL LINKS
Exchange links with your friends and webauthors who have websites with a similiar theme as yours.
